How to Write a Schengen Visa Itinerary That Actually Works

Most Indian Schengen applicants confuse "itinerary" with "flight ticket." They aren't the same. Your day-by-day itinerary is one of the most important documents in your file, and consistently one of the worst-prepared.

What a Schengen itinerary actually is

Your itinerary is a day-by-day, city-by-city plan of the trip you're proposing to take. It tells the consulate three things:

1. Where you'll be on each day.
2. Where you'll sleep on each night.
3. Roughly what you'll be doing.

It is not a flight reservation. It is not a hotel booking. It sits alongside both, and it ties your entire travel plan into a single coherent narrative.

Format and length

Keep it simple. One or two pages, plain A4, clean formatting.

• Trip dates at the top.
• A small table with columns for date, city, accommodation and a brief plan.
• Total nights per city should match your hotel bookings.
• Total trip duration should match your insurance and flight reservation.

If your itinerary, your hotel bookings and your insurance dates don't all line up exactly, you have an inconsistency the consulate will see immediately.

Sample itinerary: 7-day France-only trip

SCHENGEN VISA ITINERARY: [Full Name]

Trip dates: 12 June 2026 to 18 June 2026 (7 days, 6 nights) · Country: France · Visa country: France

• Day 1 · Thu 12 Jun Arrive Paris CDG (Air France AF217, 14:35). Check in at Hotel [Name], Paris. Evening walk along the Seine.
• Day 2 · Fri 13 Jun Paris. Eiffel Tower, Trocadéro, Champ de Mars. Afternoon: Musée d'Orsay.
• Day 3 · Sat 14 Jun Paris. Louvre and surrounding gardens. Afternoon: Le Marais walking tour.
• Day 4 · Sun 15 Jun Day trip to Versailles. Evening return to Paris.
• Day 5 · Mon 16 Jun Travel to Lyon by TGV. Check in at Hotel [Name], Lyon.
• Day 6 · Tue 17 Jun Lyon. Vieux Lyon, Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière.
• Day 7 · Wed 18 Jun Travel back to Paris by TGV. Departure flight from Paris CDG (Air France AF216, 21:30).

Accommodation summary: 12–15 Jun Hotel [Name], Paris (3 nights) · 15–17 Jun Hotel [Name], Lyon (2 nights) · 17–18 Jun Hotel [Name], Paris (1 night). Total: 6 nights, 7 days. All in France.

Sample: 14-day France + Italy trip

Trip dates: 5–18 September 2026 (13 nights). France: 4 nights, Italy: 9 nights. Visa country: Italy (main destination by nights).

Notice: this trip applies through Italy, not France, even though the entry is into Paris. That's the rule of main destination at work.

Itinerary mistakes that get visas refused

• Itinerary that doesn't match hotel bookings.
• Day-by-day plan that ignores travel time between cities.
• Itinerary that lists places that are closed on the days in question.
• Itinerary far too dense to be realistic.
• No itinerary at all, or a one-line summary like "Touring Europe."

Don't fake your bookings. A holding reservation only works if the consulate can verify it, and its dates have to match the itinerary you submit.
