Germany is the second-most-popular Schengen destination for Indian applicants, and arguably the most procedurally strict. If France runs on a 15-day schedule and a forgiving file, Germany runs on real timelines, real document scrutiny, and real consequences for getting things wrong.

Who can apply for a Germany Schengen visa from India

Any Indian passport holder. The most common categories:

• Tourist visa. For holidays and sightseeing.
• Family or friend visit visa. Common for visiting relatives in Germany. Requires a Verpflichtungserklärung (formal obligation letter) from the host in many cases.
• Business visa. For meetings, conferences, fairs (Germany has many) and short engagements.
• Conference / event visa. Germany hosts a large share of European trade fairs: Hannover Messe, ITB Berlin, IAA, Bauma.

Why Germany is stricter than France

German consulates are known for two things: rigid document requirements and longer processing times. They also tend to issue shorter-validity visas to first-time Indian applicants. • Employment contract or appointment letter.
• Visiting card.

Travel

• Hotel bookings or accommodation proof for every night.
• Day-by-day itinerary.
• If a family / friend visit: a formal invitation, plus the host's Verpflichtungserklärung if they are sponsoring.

Germany-specific quirk: many German consulates expect documents in a specific stapling and folder order. VFS Germany usually publishes the order. Following it isn't optional. Mis-ordered files are returned at the counter.

German consulates typically expect Indian applicants to demonstrate financial capacity around €45 per day for the duration of stay, plus return travel and accommodation. In INR terms, a healthy benchmark for a 7-day trip is ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh in the personal account, with stable history.

Processing time: the realistic picture

Officially 15 calendar days. In practice:

• Off-peak: 10–20 working days.
• Peak (March to August): 3–8 weeks.

Apply 8 to 10 weeks ahead in peak season. Six weeks is the absolute minimum.

Why Germany visas get refused

• Document inconsistencies. Germany rewards meticulous files; the smallest mismatch is flagged.
• Insufficient ties to India. A particular issue for young, single, salaried applicants applying alone.
• Vague itinerary. "Travel around Germany for 10 days" is not an itinerary.
• Cover letter generic or absent. Templated cover letters are visible from a kilometre away.
