Refusal Recovery

Your visa was refused. Here is what the letter actually says.

We read the refusal against the file you submitted, name the ground the consulate actually relied on, and tell you whether to appeal or reapply.

Read my refusal letter

Attach the notice the consulate gave you. We'll tell you which grounds were ticked, what the first one actually means, and whether it is the kind of thing a stronger file answers.

Previous refusal

Your letter is stored privately, used only to read your refusal, and deleted within 24 hours unless you create an account. It is never published and never shared.

Is this your first refusal? (required)

You can run this without the letter — we'll read what your answers tell us. Attaching the notice is what lets us name the exact grounds that were ticked.

Common refusal grounds

Why Schengen visas get refused

Pick the ground on your letter.

Purpose of stay

Most common

The officer could not see why this trip, on these dates, needed to happen.

Usually caused by

  • A cover letter that could describe any holiday
  • An itinerary the hotel bookings do not match
  • Eleven nights planned, four nights booked

Sufficient funds

The balance did not read as genuinely yours and available for this trip.

Usually caused by

  • A large credit landing days before you applied
  • Three months of statements instead of six
  • A sponsor with no proof of the relationship

Ties to home country

Nothing in the file showed what brings you back.

Usually caused by

  • An employment letter with no approved leave
  • No property, dependants or business documents
  • A first application with no travel history behind it

Travel insurance

Most fixable

The policy fell short of the cover the visa requires.

Usually caused by

  • Cover ending on the return date rather than after it
  • A limit below the required minimum
  • A policy naming one country instead of the Schengen area

Reliability of the file

Two documents in your file told different stories.

Usually caused by

  • Leave dates that do not match the itinerary
  • A job title the salary slips do not support
  • A booking cancelled before the interview

The decision that matters

Appeal or reapply. They are not the same thing.

An appeal argues the consulate got it wrong. A fresh application accepts the finding and answers it with a better file. Most refusals call for the second — and choosing the first can cost months you did not have to spend.

Time since the decisionAppeal windows are short and run from the date on the letter.
Deciding countryEach member state runs its own appeal procedure.
The ground they tickedDocumentary means something was missing. Discretionary means they weighed it and were not persuaded.

Where this usually points

Reapply with a rebuilt file

  • A documentary ground says something was missing, not that the officer misjudged you. An appeal argues judgement, so it has nothing to work with.
  • The fix is evidence — the document that was absent, or the one that contradicted another. That belongs in a fresh application.
  • You are inside the appeal window, so nothing is lost by preparing the new file first and keeping the option open.

What we do

We rebuild the file around the ground that failed.

Same applicant, same trip, same salary. What changes is what the file proves and how quickly an officer can see it.
