France Tourist Visa Documents Checklist for Indian Applicants

If you're applying for a France tourist visa from India, this is the document checklist to follow. Not a generic template scraped off five other blogs, but a real India-specific list organised the way the consulate looks at your file.

Personal documents

• Valid passport. At least 3 months of validity beyond your intended departure date and at least two blank pages for the visa sticker.
• All previous passports if you have any. The consulate will check your travel history.
• Two recent Schengen-format photographs. 35mm x 45mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months, no smile.
• Completed France visa application form. Filled in via the France-Visas portal, printed, signed and dated.
• A clear, well-written cover letter.

Financial documents

These are the documents the consulate weighs most heavily for an Indian applicant.

• Personal bank statements for the last 3 to 6 months, on the bank's letterhead, stamped and signed.
• Last 3 years of ITR with computation.
• Form 16 for the last 2 years (salaried applicants).
• Last 3 months of salary slips.
• Fixed deposit certificates, mutual fund statements, or other investment proof if your bank balance alone is on the lower side.

Watch out for: round-figure deposits in the last 30 days. Salary credits that don't match the company name on your employer letter. Statements that are unstamped.

Employment documents

• No Objection Certificate (NOC) and leave-approval letter on company letterhead.
• Employment contract or appointment letter.
• Visiting card.

If self-employed

• Business registration certificate, partnership deed or company incorporation document.
• GST registration certificate and last 2 quarters of GST returns.
• Business bank statements for the last 6 months.
• A few recent invoices or contracts.

If a student

• Bonafide letter from the institution on letterhead.
• Leave-approval covering the trip dates.
• Sponsor (parent) documents: ITR, bank statements, salary slips.

Travel documents

• Round-trip flight reservation. Use a verifiable holding reservation and do not buy actual tickets before approval.
• Hotel bookings for every night of your trip.
• Day-by-day itinerary listing each city, dates, accommodation and the broad daily plan.
• Schengen-compliant travel insurance with €30,000 minimum medical coverage.

Special-case documents

Travelling with children under 18

• Birth certificate of the child.
• Both parents' identity documents.
• If only one parent is travelling: notarised consent from the non-travelling parent.
• School bonafide letter and leave approval.

Visiting family or friends in France

• Invitation letter from the host.
• Host's residence proof (utility bill or French residence permit).
• Host's identity document or passport copy.
• If host is sponsoring financially: their financial documents and a sponsorship undertaking.

1. Application form on top.
2. Passport (current and old, in a clear plastic folder).

Common mistakes that cause refusal

• Bank statements without a bank stamp.
• Sudden large deposits in the last 30 days that aren't explained.
• Cover letter dated weeks before the application date.
• Itinerary that doesn't match hotel bookings.
• Insurance that doesn't cover the entire trip duration.

Spend an extra hour on document polish before you spend the visa fee.
