Top 10 Reasons Schengen Visas Get Rejected for Indian Applicants
Roughly 15% of Schengen visa applications from India are refused. That's hundreds of thousands of trips cancelled, deposits lost, and dreams deferred every year. Almost all of these refusals are preventable.
Here are the ten reasons Schengen visas get refused for Indian applicants, ranked by how often we see them, with what to do about each.
1. Insufficient or unstable financial means
By far the most common refusal reason. Sometimes the absolute balance is low, but more often the issue is stability: sudden deposits in the last few weeks, round-figure transfers from family, or a balance that only appeared after the applicant decided to travel.
How to avoid it: Plan ahead. Build a clean, stable balance over 3 to 6 months. If you need a sponsor, document the relationship and the sponsorship properly. Don't just receive a transfer.
2. Insufficient ties to India
Common for young, unmarried, salaried applicants applying for their first Schengen visa. The consulate is asking: what brings you back?
How to avoid it: Build the case in your cover letter and supporting documents. Family responsibilities, property, financial commitments, ongoing studies and professional commitments. Anything that anchors you to India counts. Specific is stronger than vague.
3. Weak or templated cover letter
A generic cover letter that could have been written by anyone for any country is a missed opportunity at best, and a refusal trigger at worst.
How to avoid it: Write a real cover letter. Specific dates, specific cities, specific financial picture, specific ties to India.
4. Inconsistent itinerary
Your itinerary says 12 days, your hotel bookings cover 10, your insurance is valid for 14, and your cover letter says 11. This kind of inconsistency reads to the consulate as either dishonesty or sloppiness.
How to avoid it: Treat your itinerary as the single source of truth. Make sure your flight reservation, hotel bookings, insurance dates and cover letter all match it exactly.
5. Travel insurance doesn't meet Schengen standards
Cheap travel insurance is one of the easiest places to mess up a clean file. The policy needs to cover €30,000 in medical expenses, be valid in all 27 Schengen countries, and cover the entire duration of your stay.
How to avoid it: Buy from an established insurer. Check the policy schedule for territorial coverage, repatriation, and the validity dates.
6. Wrong country of application
Many Indian applicants pick the country with the "easiest reputation" rather than the country dictated by the rule of main destination.
How to avoid it: Apply through the country where you'll spend the most days.
7. Document inconsistencies
ITR years that don't line up with salary slips. Employer letter dates that conflict with leave dates. Bank statement employer name that doesn't match the cover letter employer name.
How to avoid it: Cross-check every document against every other document. Everything should tell exactly the same story.
8. Vague or unjustified travel purpose
"I want to see Europe" is not a travel purpose. "I'm visiting Paris for 4 days, then Lyon for 3, with these planned attractions, on these dates" is.
How to avoid it: Write a real itinerary. Real cities, real dates, plausible activities.
9. Past Schengen overstay or non-compliance
If you've previously stayed in the Schengen area beyond your permitted duration, even by a few days, it's logged.
How to avoid it: Be honest. Always. If you've been refused before, declare it in the application.
10. Choosing the wrong visa category
Tourist when it should have been business. Tourist when there's a wedding involved that should have been declared as a family visit.
How to avoid it: Pick the category that genuinely matches your purpose, even if it requires more paperwork.
