What Questions Are Actually Asked in a Schengen Visa Interview?

(Interviews are far more common for long-term national visas, study, NLV or DNV, than for a short tourist visa.)
Is there even an interview?
For a short-stay tourist visa, usually not. Unlike the US or UK, Schengen decisions are typically made on documents. Your file is assessed by the consulate, the VFS agent who physically receives it is only a collection agent, not the decision-maker. Occasionally a consulate calls a short-stay applicant in to clarify something, but that's the exception, not the norm.

- What's the purpose of your trip?
- Which countries and cities, and for how long?
- Who is paying for it?
- What do you do, and how long have you worked there?
- Do you have family in India / in Europe?
- Have you travelled abroad before?
How to answer well
- Match your file. Answers must line up with your cover letter and itinerary, contradiction is the real risk.
- Be specific and brief. “Seven days in France, Paris and Lyon” beats “seeing Europe.”
- Be honest about ties. Job, family, property, commitments that bring you home.
- Don't embellish. Never invent a detail that clashes with your documents.
